News Flash! June 14th is Flag Day and the High Plains Historical Society will sponsor our first Flag Day observation, at the museum and at the park. At around Noon we will start our program honoring all those brave men and women who served in the armed forces. Especially W.W.II. The Northern Colorado Color Guards will honor our American flag and the veterans of World War II. We will sing the American Anthem and prayers will be offered by Marine Corps Chaplin, Master of Ceremonies, Robert K. Murphy (USAF) will introduce our guests and our main feature, a tribute to Colonel I. Russell Turner (United States Marine Corps, 1st Marine Division). We have erected an exhibition in the museum of all those who have served in the military. And especially Col Turner’s dress uniform, citations and medals. This display was erected by Becca Hartley, Bob Barnes, Pam Stewart and others on the museum board. We will also dedicate and celebrate the Prairie View school house restoration and preservation. Refreshments will be served. We expect a great turnout and hope you and your family will join us on June 14th.
The Nunn school bell will ring again! When the old Nunn School closed many years ago, an auction was held and everything was sold. Including the school house itself. Lloyd Giffen was at the auction and bought the 600 pound bell for five dollars. It was to set by his back door for many years and also his son’s back door as well, as Larry Giffen lived there also. We lost Larry some time ago and now the Lloyd Giffen family has presented the bell to our museum. Bob Barnes, board members and volunteers have mounted the bell near the Prairie View school house. It is a must see for one and all. A special thanks to Lowell Nase who was instrumental in this project as well as setting the bricks in the blacksmith shop addition and for restoring our highway sign, as well as all the other projects he has been busy with in the last few months. We also want to thank the Giffen family for their wonderful gift.
Another big surprise folks. Iva Lewis donated a small but historic building to the museum. It was built by Murray Giffen and his father Sam. They were wheat farmers for years in the area. Bob Barnes (Curator in charge of the equipment yard and machine collection) moved it over and attached it to the Blacksmith shop. Bob Murphy (blacksmith shop curator and an enterprising gentleman) located some old bricks and so it has a brick entrance and floor. It has provided a place for some of our priceless old treasures. An outstanding addition to our museum.
That is all for now folks. Hopefully we will see on June 14th for Flag Day.
